Heartland Events

Payne’s Creek Historic State Park
Today, nature enthusiasts and hikers can enjoy walking along trails through the park’s natural areas. Paynes Creek and the adjoining Peace River provide opportunities for canoeing, kayaking and fishing. A museum at the visitor center depicts the lives of Florida’s Seminole Indians and pioneers during the 19th century. The visitor center is open daily during park hours of operation.

Cracker Trail Museum
Since its beginning in 1967, Cracker Trail Museum has collected over 4,000 items related to pioneer-era Florida history. Each item is maintained either within glass enclosed cases or strategically placed around the floor of the museum. Many of the larger items are provided in a setting that would be reminiscent of pioneer living.

Hardee County Wildlife Refuge
From a few rough cages located around the perimeter of Pioneer Park to a model Refuge, dreams became reality when we relocated to our new facility in 2001. Today the Refuge is home to native Florida wildlife and a few exotic species, each housed in natural-type habitats.
